Deionized and Mixbed
Ions which are found in water in dissolved state are cationic (positive) and anionic (negative) charged ions. Removal of cationic and anionic ions in water through ion exchange method using resin is named as deionization and systems used for this purpose are called deionization systems.
Two types of resins are used in deionization process. Water primarily passes through the tank which contains cationic resin. During this passage cationic ions contained in water are retained by cationic resin. Later, water passes through the tank that contains anionic resin. There, anionic ions in the water are retained by anionic resin contained in the tank. In the result of these processes, cationic and anionic ions are removed at the rate of 90-95%.
Resin quantities in the tanks are determined with the calculations made according to the raw water conductivity, flow rate of the passing water and ion retention capacity of the resin that is used. The system is fully automatic and controlled by valves with microprocessors. With the conductivity meter installed at the output, conductivity of water can be controlled and when output water conductivity exceeds the desired value the system enters washing process (regeneration) automatically. Regeneration process starts with washing cationic resin with hydrochloric acid (HCI) solution and ends with washing anionic resin with caustic (NaOH) solution. At the end of this process resins contained in both tanks are regenerated and system becomes ready to produce deionized water.
Deionization systems are particularly used for meeting the pure water demand in industrial facilities. In processes where lower conductivity is required at system output, mixbed unit is installed at the end of deionization system.
As can be understood from its name, mixbed units are single column systems where cationic and anionic resin is placed in the same tank. With the deionization system installed at the output of the deionization system produces water with a quality that has very low conductivity.
Resin quantity to be placed in Mixbed unit is calculated in a project specific manner according to the conductivity of input water and resin capacity.
